Is there one lifestyle change that will promote health and happiness more than any other?

Without question it is exercise, and I mean exerting yourself at your target heart rate for sustained periods of time (preferably an hour or more per session). Something as simple as walking most days of the week for 30 to 60 minutes at your target heart rate is all that’s necessary. (Note: Walking the dog, climbing stairs, and walking around a lot are all great, and the more active you are in your life the more vigorous you will become – but that is living, it is not exercise.)

The human body is meant to move. It rapidly declines if it is not constantly challenged. The human spirit that lives in the body requires movement, too. Exercise has many benefits. It promotes the release of chemicals that improve mood, it strengthens the immune system, and it helps reduce almost every health risk. Healthy bodies have strong hearts and lungs; muscles that like doing work and stretching; and sturdy bones that will keep you upright and mobile well into advanced age - if you are lucky. Make exercise your friend; it will serve you all your days!
