Take5Moment – Recharge, Regroup, Refocus, Relax


If you have a job that keeps you seated in front of computer screen for hours each day or if you have a lot of physical and mental stress in your life, there’s a website I want to tell you about where you can “take 5” minutes and recharge.

I was recently invited to contribute a post and join a panel of experts at a website called Take5Moment. I was not familiar with the site, but when I visited I found a wealth of resources to help me and my patients combat some of the things that distress us.

Find Rescue Right at Your Desk

Founders Sherry Zak Morris, a registered yoga teacher and ex-corporate computer expert and Gayna Scott, a recovering corporate warrior came up with the concept of this website. You are invited to choose a short video or a blog post from a library of wellness topics and then “take 5” minutes to de-stress either physically or mentally right there at your workstation. These short breaks are designed to be “consumed” at your desk. You can learn some exercises to help with physical desk distress or you can get an emotional or spiritual pick-me-up.

Lots of Experts

A variety of wellness experts contribute to this site including yoga teachers, wellness coaches, personal trainers, chiropractors, psychologists, authors, entrepreneurs – and now a Nurse Practitioner, too!

You can find topics on everything from proper ergonomics at your workstation to breathing techniques to different ways to think about and manage stress. There’s a little something for everyone here and enough different voices to make it likely you will find one or more who resonate for you.

Seek Rescue Away from your Desk, Too, Please

But, please, don’t limit your stress reduction efforts to just 5 minutes at your desk. As a health professional, I’ll give you the same advice I give my patients – if you are a human being you should be practicing some form of yoga. A yoga class once or twice a week (or daily) can push back a lot of the stress that builds up in a busy life. Why? Because yoga is a practice that brings the body, the breath and the mind into the same place at the same time. When is the last time you brought those three together, hmmm?

So when you get 5 minutes there at your computer, go check out Take5Moment – and when you leave the office go find a yoga class. You may need to try a few classes with different teachers and different styles to find your yoga home. But give yourself the chance to have the full experience of this profound and healing practice. Once you find a yoga class that brings you home to yourself, regardless of your current size or health status, you will have found a powerful defense against stress, disease and disability. Namaste.
